South African travelers just love Kulula, especially for being South Africa’s first no-frills low cost carrier.  Its especially known for its entertaining (and typically competitive) advertising campaigns. Kulula Airlines was founded in 2001, and flies to 6 key cities around South Africa from its flight hubs at OR Tambo International and Lanseria International Airports. The airline is headquartered in Kempton Park, Gauteng, and operates scheduled services to most major South African business hubs.  The airline’s branding is bold, and bright green, and their livery is frequently hilarious. As is to be expected aboard any low cost carrier, snacks and refreshments are available for purchase. The airline’s in-flight magazine, Khuluma, has a readership of over 200,000 people per month.  The check-in counters for Kulula open 90 minutes before departure, and close 30 minutes prior to take-off.

FlySafair is one of the latest entrants in to the low cost airline market in SA. Book your flights between Cape Town and Johannesburg or to another of South Africa’s key cities online now!  Use our flight price checking engine or find out more about FlySafair below.

About the airline

FlySafair is South Africa’s first true low cost airline in the business model sense. They are owned by Safair, a private aviation company that’s been operating in South Africa for over two decades.  FlySafair brought some welcome competition into the airline market in 2015. The airline’s primary hub is situated at Cape Town International Airport, from where it flies to four target cities around the country.

Founded in 2013, the airline still faced a number of legal and regulatory challenges in obtaining its air services license from the South African Air Services Licensing well as Comair. The issue of local ownership was central to this obstacle, and after extensive restructuring to meet the 75% local ownership requirement, the airline took to the skies on 16 October 2014.

About FlySafair

Founded in March 1969, Safair is an aviation company specialising in aircraft chartering, cargo services, lesasing and sales.  They also offer training, safety, maintenance and aircraft modifications. Its primary client in the 1980s was the South African Defence Force, however the company has significantly diversified its client base since then. Safair presently operates one of the largest Lockheed L-100 Hercules cargo aircraft fleets in the world. By mid 2014 its fleet consisted of 4 Boeing 737s and 6 Lockheed LM-100Js. The company is headquartered at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, and routinely flies to Johannesburg, Port Elizabeth and Cape Town.

FlySafair Specials

As is typical of a new airline launch, FlySafair launched with exceptionally low fares. Flights between George and Cape Town and PE and Cape Town were going on sale from only R399 for a one-way flight. The airline prices are still very competitive, however it is worth noting that their standard airfares do not include booked luggage.  This is billed for separately. Short stay or one-day business passengers do, however, have the option of not opting for checked-in luggage, making the airline ideal for one-day business commutes between Cape Town and Johannesburg.

Flight Routes

The airline operates scheduled passenger flights between Cape Town and Johannesburg, as well as between Cape Town and George, and PE and Cape Town.

Baggage Restrictions

It is important to take note of the fact that FlySafair’s standard airfares do not include checked luggage costs; in true low cost carrier style, checked luggage is billed separately at R150 per piece upon booking or at R250 upon check-in. Passengers are allowed 2 pieces of free carry-on luggage with a joined weight of 7kg. These bags should not be more than 56 x 36 x 23 cm in measurement.

Getting a seat on FlySafair is now easier than ever, making it accessible to the wider public.  Read all about the new deal with Checkers here OR you can simply book your seat using ClickClickGo!

Seat selection

FlySafair gives you a selection of Extra Room Seats or Pre-selected Seats.  You can book these seats at an extra cost prior to departure.  Payments for these special seating arrangements are non-refundable.

Contact FlySafair directly on 087 135 1351 to book a cheap flight, or email Alternatively, you can also use the above booking form to book FlySafair flights online yourself – 24/7.

The Mango Experience

Mango Airlines is a state owned low cost airline founded in 2006. As a subsidiary of South African Airways, it operates scheduled domestic services on a no-frills, cheap fare basis. The airline’s tongue in cheek advertising and cheap flight prices has since made it a well-loved household brand among travelling South Africans.  The airline is headquartered at Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport, with its main hub situated at the same airport. By 2014 the airline recorded a net profit of R39.1m after tax.

As one would expect with any low cost airline, a standard Mango flight does not include complimentary food or refreshments. These items can, however, be purchased in flight. Entertainment aboard Mango Airlines comes in the form of Mango TV and the airline magazine, Mango Juice. The airline, which has benefitted from its position as SAA subsidiary for some years, has recently been facing increasing competition from a number of new budget airlines entering the South African domestic aviation industry.

Air travelers can presently redeem SAA Voyager Miles flying Mango, but are not yet able to earn SAA miles flying with Mango. Additional benefits of SAA Voyager such as extra baggage, class upgrades and lounge access benefits are not applicable when flying Mango.

Easy on the budget but still an enjoyable experience!  The airline now offers their 186 passengers a more comfortable flight with their new and improved seats offering more legroom.  FlyMango allows passengers to pre-book a seat upfront at an additional charge, offering customers the flexibility that they might require.  Passengers will be allocated a seat on check-in if you choose not to pre-book one.

Infants get a free baggage allowance of 10kg. Additional weight on Mango flights is charged for separately, and no single piece of luggage weighting more than 32kg will be accepted.

About the airline

Situated in Tremblay-en-France, just north of Paris, Air France operates as the official carrier for France.  In 2015, the airline carried more than 46 000 000 passengers to 168 destinations in 93 countries. The airline was formed in October of 1933 and was France’s national carrier for 70 years before its merger with KLM in 2003.

The current Air France livery consists of a white scheme with the blue Air France title and design. This current design has been used since the late 70’s with only slight changes being introduced throughout the 2000’s.

The airline operates both passenger and cargo services across 168 destinations in 93 countries across 6 continents.  Most of their international flights operates from Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris.  The airline also has a presence at Paris-Orly, Lyon-Saint-Exupery, Marseilles Provence, Toulouse Blagnac, Nice Côte d’Azur and Bordeaux-Merignac airports.  New routes are on the horizon with Air France becoming a more strategic partner with Delta Airlines and Alitalia through the SkyTeam alliance.

The Fleet

The current fleet consists of both Airbus and Boeing aircraft with an average age of 11 years.  Air France was the first airline in Europe to start operating the Airbus A380-800 ‘superjumbo’ aircraft on the Paris to New York route in June 2010.

Air France was also famous for their use of the Concorde.  Unfortunately this service was cancelled following a crash in 2000.  High fuel and maintenance costs also attributed to this decision being implemented.

Baggage options

The standard baggage allowance for an Air France flight is 1 piece of hand baggage as well as a personal accessory (like a handbag or laptop) and then a 23kg piece of checked luggage (32kg are allowed when flying business class).  In addition to this, they also offer many other baggage options to make traveling with them easier.

  • Additional baggage options can be purchased if you require more weight or are traveling with heavier pieces.
  • Baggage delivery and pick-up options at the time and location of your choice, before departure and after arrival at Charles de Gaulle
  • Baggage drop off the day before departue is also possible and will save you precious time on your day of travel
  • Protective baggage covers can be rented for strollers, car seats or wheelchairs and will give you that extra peace of mind that everything is in safe hands
