About British Airways

british airways

This is the national flag carrier of the United Kingdom and the biggest airline in terms of number of aircraft and the second largest in terms of number of passengers carried per year.  Situated at Heathrow Airport, British Airways opened its doors in 1972.  Established by the government to manage to other national corporations, British Overseas Airways Corporation and British European Airways, they later merged to form British Airways as it is known today.   BA, as British Airways is also known, forms part of the Oneworld alliance of airlines together with American Airlines, Cathay Pacific and Qantas.

The airline currently employs around 40 000 staff which includes 15 000 cabin crew, about 4000 pilots and a around 10 000 ground staff.

Interesting facts about the airline:

  • more than 40 million customers a year
  • serves 35 million cups of tea per year
  • more than 36.5 million meals are being served per annum
  • about 37 million bottles of wine gets consumed!

This UK carrier currently flies to 160 destinations worldwide, including 6 local destinations.  This makes British Airways one of only a small number of airlines that flies to all 6 populated continents.

The Fleet

British AirwaysThe current fleet consists mainly of Airbus A320-200 and Boeing 747-400 but has recently introduced the Airbus A380 as well as the Boeing 787 Dreamliner to its already large and modern collection.  These state of the art aircrafts with their superior cabin design promises a more relaxed travel experience.  With specially designed seats and a new lighting system, you might forget that you’re flying altogether.

The BA Experience

When choosing British Airways as your preferred airline carrier you can expect all inclusive fares, no hidden costs.  You will also get the flexibility of choosing your own seat 24 hours in advance as well as free food and drinks served on all flights.  BA offers convenient booking and check-in methods as well as being accessible digitally, including a mobile app.

The brand’s livery is clearly distinguishable with its Union Jack themed design.  In 1997 a controversial change to this theme was quickly turned around again after the Prime Minister at the time, Margaret Thatcher, displayed her disapproval.  The airline then adopted the original Union Jack tail-fin design that was originally crafted for the Concorde.  This design is still being used today.
Frequent flyers of BA, Iberia and Oneworld airline alliances, can enjoy the benefits from the tiered incentive program called the Executive Club.  With this program you will be rewarded Avios points that can in turn be redeemed on British Airways flights, cabin upgrades, car rental, accommodation and various experiences.
